Jamie Dukehart-Conti grew up to be a Denver Broncos Cheerleader and Miss Colorado 2008. I was in her A.P. English class. We didn’t really know each other. Most of her senior-pictures were what you’d expect — pretty and whatever, standing next to a tree or whatever, holding a goddam golden harp or whatever. But I remember she had one senior-photograph — mysterious in its composition, unpopular in its wallet-sized demand, and downright damning in its depressing implications — that was so full of unexpected sorrow and kind-of-seriously-weird pathos that I wanted to draw it. So, you know … I did.
I showed it to her, seven years ago, after I was finished. I figured she might realize that someone had finally understood her deeper life, her more beautiful, honest self. She was like, “Oh, wow! Oooh. Picture of me! Nice!”
Fucking cheerleaders.
