The 1970 Motor Service’s Automotive Encyclopedia. Part 1 in a series.
I picked this up at Cluttered Closet for the extravagant price of $5. It’s about 3 tons and smells like a church basement. I’m afraid the pages will disintegrate in my hands like the rust-pitted left rear quarterpanel on a 1974 Cougar, built up from years of improper water channeling. Despite that, it’s a fascinating look into a world where engines were repaired with sledgehammers and mechanics didn’t need a master’s degree in computer science to diagnose a CHECK ENGINE light. And there’s also the irony in the state-of-the-art vehicles they had back in 1969, when this book was written, as I’ll post later.
And yes, I fully intend on reading every single, page, cover to cover. Right now I’m on Chapter 8: Engine Bearings and Valves, discovering the wonderful world of valve heat dissipation.
